BrightEyes Alpaca Retreat

Friendly Alpacas.
So Much to Learn.
In the Heart of Virginia.

BrightEyes Alpaca Retreat is indeed a retreat for our alpacas, livestock guardian dogs and us! We are an alpaca farm set up as an agritourism facility that hosts groups and organizations seeking a different type of educational experience.

In addition to the alpaca farm, we offer lodging as an Airbnb residence with a separate apartment above a detached garage for rent. The apartment includes a fully equipped kitchenette, a dining area, sitting area, and bedroom with a queen bed.

Our Farm

Our property is a unique micro farm that supports our livestock and their working protectors, a Great Pyrenees named Jake and our Italian Maremmas named Jili and Journey.  Alpacas are very social animals, sharing every aspect of their lives with their community. As animals of prey, the alpacas rely on Jake, Jili and Journey for  their protection. The guardians watch over the girls and warn us if they detect problems or predators.

Schedule a Tour

To learn more about the alpacas, their protectors and the details of the farm itself, schedule a tour or event with us! We are continually updating our educational opportunities for schools, groups, and organizations. We can arrange for a broad educational tour or detail specific aspects of the farm – alpacas, fiber, barn, pasture and livestock guardian animals.

Our ‘Pacas and Pups
alpaca ruby

Ruby, is a bit shy and skittish; still developing her confidence, but she is very curious. She is finally starting to get more comfortable interacting with us!

alpaca lily

Lily, takes the role of the herd leader. She is protective of her friends, and will approach anyone she thinks may impact the dynamic of the herd. Lily is the most social of our girls and loves to pose for photos. She is also calm and loves to lean on you and give kisses on your cheek.

Alpaca Connie

Connie, is somewhat aloof, but tries to approach you on her own terms. If you have food she will become your BFF! She has huge alpaca eyes with long eyelashes and a superior white fleece.

Alpaca Brownie

Everyone calls Brownette, Brownie!  She is sweet, gentle and sometimes protective when a stranger appears. Brownie loves to eat everyone’s food! She flips her bowl and prefers eating outside the bowl. Her favorite pastimes include rolling in the dirt and sneaking into the barn. She also charms Bill and follows him around.

In July of 2017 we acquired  Safyre, our rare dark brown with tips of red is a firecracker and Giggles, the youngest has unusually fine white fiber and a spunky personality. Sadly, despite all our efforts, Safyre passed in 2022.

In the summer of 2018, we added 3 pregnant females to our BrightEyes Family. Bunny-O our beige lady and Vanilla Shake (Nilla), with her pure white fiber –Bunny & Nilla delivered our first BrightEyes cria in April 2019 And Coco surprised us with a birth in May 2019. *Coco passed unexpectedly in 2021 & Nilla passed in 2022*

Jili is an Italian Maremma Sheepdog with a happy, bouncy personality. She tries very hard to have good manners, but she is just so excited to see you all the time. Jake and Jili complement each other; she learns from him, supports him and makes sure the herd is safe at all times! She loves to eat, and loves the opportunity to learn new commands, as long as there is a TREAT as her reward!

guard dog jake

Jake is a Great Pyrenees – our 140 pound “lion”; a gentle giant, calm and easy going.  The breed is very stubborn—Jake will do what we want him to do after he decides that it is his idea! Great Pyrenees are nocturnal, so he is on guard for predators while we sleep. He loves to meet people at the gate and check them out, with hopes of getting hugs and treats.  Sadly, Jake passed away June 2023

Journey, joined us in October 2021 as our newest addition, an Italian Maremma sheepdog just like Jili. He is bouncy, jumpy and mouthy at this point, but very smart!! He is learning his “manners” and observing the alpaca herd and our LGDs from afar. As he gets older and bigger we will start introducing him to his herd and Jake & Jili will help him hone his Guardian skills. He will be a responsible adult guardian in 2 years!
